Initial Steps in Dealing with Suicide and Depression

Client reviews following procedures to deal with suicide and depression until proper treatment can be initialized.
1.  Ensure that you know whom to turn to and where to go if intense suicidal ideas surface.
2.  Sign a life contract with your therapist or someone you trust that you will not, under any circumstances, do anything to harm yourself without first speaking to that person.

Daily Self Monitoring Diary

Client reviews following procedures to become conscious of a gambling problem, of the intensity of the desire to gamble, and of the substantial sums of money lost.  Also, the diary may help client to monitor therapeutic progress.  Finally the diary provides valuable information about the events of the client’s week.
1.  Complete a daily observation diary throughout the entire therapeutic process.
2.  In the diary, write the answers to the following seven questions:

  • To what extent do I perceive that my gambling problem is under control?
  • How would I rate my desire to gamble?
  • To what extent do I perceive myself as being able to abstain from gambling?
  • Did I gamble today?
  • How much time in minutes and hours was spent on gambling today?
  • How much money did I spend on gambling, excluding wins?
  • How might I specify my state of mind or the particular events of the day?

Moderating Gambling

Client reviews following procedures to slow down and control gambling.
1.  Make your money go further by placing smaller bets.  You won’t win as much, but you also don’t lose as much when you lose.  And we all know you’re going to lose more than you win.
2.  Allow some time to pass between games.  If you can find something else to do, even for just five or ten minutes between card games or races, you’ll lose a lot less money. 

Financial Strategies

Client reviews following procedures to restrict access to money.
1.  Temporarily transfer the management of finances to a third party.
2.  Cancel credit cards.
3.  Do not carry an ATM card.
4.  Limit access to the bank account by requesting that a cosigner be required for all cash withdrawals. 
5.  Give clear instructions to friends, family, and even the owners of gambling establishments that they are not to lend you any money.

1.  Increase your awareness regarding which of your personal needs are not being met. 
2.  Emphasized those needs which can only be met through personal relationships and focus on nurturing the relationships which can fulfill those needs.

Client reviews following procedures to avoid gambling.
1.  Keep a photograph of someone very special to you who may be affected by your gambling.
2.  Whenever you have the urge to gamble, look at the photograph and consider that person.
3.  Remember that the photograph is not for good luck, but rather break the desire to gamble out of love and respect for the person in the photograph.
