"Calculating the Costs" Exercise
Play CD Track 2 for more information regarding this technique.
Client writes down answers to the following questions.

1. How much does my habit cost me per day? Week? Month? Year?
2. What could I save in other benefits: social, financial, sexual, security?
3. To what other activities could I have applied this time and money?

"Photo Technique"
Play CD Track 3 for more information regarding this technique.
1.  Client finds photo of him or herself as a child.  2. Client studies the photo.  3. Client answers the question "Do you love the child in the photo and can you relate to it?"  4. Client writes a few words about his or her inner child.

"Drawing Exercise"
Play CD Track 3 for more information regarding this technique.
1. Client uses his or her non-dominant hand to draw a picture of him or herself as a child with crayons or colored pencils. 2. Client discusses choices in color and activity in the drawing. 

"Finding the Trouble Spot" Exercise
Play CD Track 4 for more information regarding this technique.
1.  Client gets comfortable and spends a few minutes focusing on his or her body. Client then finds the spot in his or her body where tension is most strongly concentrated and puts awareness on that spot.  2. Client uses imagery to visualize soothing, relaxing warmth surrounding her to ease that discomfort. Client places hand over that spot.  3. Client asks his or her body what it wants to tell him or her.  4. For about 10 minutes, client listens to what his or her body tells him or her and pays attention to all images, ideas, physical sensations, and thoughts that surface into awareness.  5. Client begins a dialogue with inner child voice.

"Having a Good Cry" Exercise

1. Client recalls someone he or she has hurt through his or her addiction.  2. Client finds where that feeling is in his or her body.  3. Client expresses that feeling through tears.

"Evaluate the Options" Exercise
Play CD Track 6 for more information regarding this technique.
Client answers the following questions regarding the choice he or she must make.

1. Is this choice practical?
2. If not, are aspects of it practical, or can you make it practical?
3. What are the benefits?
4. What are the drawbacks?
5. Do you know the steps to follow to bring this choice about?
6. Do you feel good about this choice?
7. Does it make sense? Can you explain it clearly to someone else or on paper?
8. Would you advise a friend to make this choice?
