1.  Write down a recent example of something which caused you to display negative anger.  This is your activating experience.
2.  Write your beliefs about the experience. 
3.  Write down the consequences of taking action on those beliefs.
4.  Dispute your own belief. 
5.  Write a second set of beliefs that may reflect positive consequences.

Gaining Control

Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to gain control when cancer causes the loss of control.
1.  Talk about the illness.  Call it cancer.
2.  Choose acceptance by thinking of everything he needed to be changed to make him happy.
3.  Go through your list item by item and ask yourself if you can let go of each need or the demand to change it. 
4.   If you can’t accept it, write down the reasons why you can’t accept it. 
5.  Look at each reason and say out loud that you choose to accept it.  Eventually, your objections will begin to disappear.

Moving Beyond Guilty Feelings

1.  Identify as many guilty feelings as possible.
2.  Analyze the "if" statements for content. 
3.  Dispute any unrealistic guilt
4.  Write down new feelings to replace the guilty feelings.

Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to overcome anxiety.
1.  Unproductive worry involves unanswerable questions, chain reactions, unsolvable problems, things that are unknow­able, demands for perfect solutions, relying on anxiety as a guide, and the demand for total control. 
2.  Examine the cost and benefits of uncertainty. 
3.  Flood yourself with uncertainty.
4.  Avoid thought stopping.

Conversation Guidelines

Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to foster productive conversation with the cancer patient.
1.  Ask if the patient wants to talk.
2.  Allow the patient time if he or she does not want to talk, but make it known that you are available.
3.  Don’t plan out what you are going to say.  Instead, listen and respond to what is said.
4.  Avoid giving unsolicited advice.  If you do give advice, don’t expect it to be taken.
5.  Say cancer.  That’s what it is.
6.  Sometimes it’s best to begin with the facts.
7.  Say how you feel first.
8.  Don’t cover up your feelings.
9.  Avoid judgment and offer acceptance and support.
10.  Validate the patient’s feelings.
11.  Cry with them.

1.  Set aside time each day or at the very least once a week to reflect on the disease, its problems, its challenges, and its meaning to you.
2.  Every time you obsess about the disease, stop and tell yourself to save those thoughts for the time you had scheduled for reflection. 
3.  Visualize put­ting those thoughts in a box, knowing you can open it later.

1.  Use a toy or doll and start a story.
2.  Have the child join in.
