Creating an Energy Bank Account
Review CD track 3 for more information regarding this technique.
Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to determine productive ways to fulfill children’s needs.
1.  Imagine yourself as having an energy bank account which holds your emotional and physical energies.
2.  Whenever possible, make deposits so that you have some reserve for the bad times that often occur.  In order to keep your account balanced, you must have some idea of the price of responding to your children’s wants and needs.
3.  Determine if certain activities will replenish your emotional energy by making a deposit into your energy bank account or if those activities will be more like a withdrawal.

Worry About Yourself
Review CD track 4 for more information regarding this technique.
Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to reestablish a sense of security which can be passed on to children.
1.  Consider exercise.
2.  Find a worry partner.  This can be someone you already know or someone you have just met who has been through or is going through a similar experience.
3.  Every morning, think about the hardest times in your life and how now you’re better prepared to deal than you were ten years ago.  Think about all the ways this could have been worse.

Therapeutic Play
Review CD track 5 for more information regarding this technique.
Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to help children work through their feelings.
1.  Offer to play a game of ‘chemo,’ ‘radiation,’ or ‘operation.’  Let the children choose which role they play.  Or you may be more comfortable playing a game like ‘school’ or ‘house’ where concerns about abandonment, illness, death, disability, or love can be verbalized or acted out.  Role playing offers one more window into how the children are doing.
2.  You can also use play therapy as a way to escape from the seriousness of cancer.  Uninterrupted play with children sends valuable messages such as ‘I want to be with you,’ ‘I enjoy being with you,’ ‘cancer is not the only important thing in my life,’ and ‘it’s good to laugh and have fun even in the worst of times.’
3.  Drawings are another tool to help you know what’s going on in the minds and hearts of your children.  Suggest drawings by asking the children to draw pictures of things that make them sad, happy, of mad.  Draw with them, but be general in what you ask for.  Let the children lead.  Without any training, you can use their drawings as a springboard for discussion by asking, ‘Tell me about your picture.  What is the little boy doing?’

Feelings Football
Review CD track 5 for more information regarding this technique.
Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to help children get in touch with their feelings.
1. Begin a game of catch.
2. Each time you or your child throws the ball, name a feeling that a person who has lost someone might feel.
3. Regulate the pass based on the intensity of the specified emotion.  For example, if the emotion is strong, throw the ball hard and high.  If the emotion is less intense, throw the ball lower and softer.
