Counting Automatic Thoughts

1.  Use a 3x5 card or counting device to count thoughts as they come.
2.  As you do this, think, ‘well, there’s another fearful thought.  I’ll just count it and let it go.’
3.  Report the total number of thoughts at the each subsequent session.

1.  Realistically determine the probability of the feared event actu­ally occurring.  State the odds of the event occurring as a percent­age.

4.  Decide how you could best cope with the anxiety over failure if it were to occur.

1.  After identifying anxiety triggers, take a stack of index cards.
2.  On the back of each card write a situation that concerns you.
3.  When you feel that you have all of your concerns written down, shuffle the deck with the worries facing away from you.
4.  Then pick up the cards one at a time, look at each one, and then toss them into a wastepaper basket.

1.  Examine the costs and benefits of uncertainty.

1.  First, begin by reviewing your personal history and make note of any memories you have of feeling abandoned or neg­lected. 
2.  Consider ways that these painful memories may still be impacting your present.
3.  Ask yourself what is keeping you from forgiving whoever is involved in your painful memories.
Overcoming Regret

1.  Identify the source of your regrets.
2.  Find the lesson to be learned by identifying the root regret.  For example, what have you learned from this experience?
3.  Make amends and move on.

1.  Select an incident or situation.
2.  Role play the situation.
3.  Visualize the situation.

1.  Face.  Do not run away.

Client reviews and utilizes the following procedures to foster systematic desensitization.
1.  Find a starting place where your feelings of anxiety begin.
2.  Select a time to move forward from this point.
3.  Withdraw immediately from a situation when you experience mild anxiety.
4.  Take a few deep breaths, some muscular tensing and relaxing, and a few moments observing the scene.
5.  Move forward once more.
6.  Successively repeat these steps.

2.  Practice looking for extra meanings in words.
