"Asking for Clarification" Technique

1.  ADHD client begins dialogue with friend or spouse. Friend or spouse talks to ADHD client.  2. ADHD client interrupts speaker when he has stopped paying attention.

"Around the Anger" Technique
Play CD Track 2 for more information regarding this technique.
1.  ADHD client inhibits himself from lashing out at another person.  2. ADHD client removes himself from the situation.  3. ADHD client cools down by taking a quick walk.  4. ADHD client writes down reasons for anger.  5. ADHD client reapproaches the situation with a calm attitude.

"Record to Remember" Technique

1.  ADHD client records important messages either on paper or a cassette recorder.  2. ADHD client reads messages or listens to recording daily.

"Laugh it Off" Technique

1.  ADHD client thinks of a time when something minor has gone wrong. ADHD client thinks of a time when something minor has gone wrong.  2. ADHD client finds humor in the situation.  3. ADHD client considers the weight of problem and balances it with the humor of the situation.

"Dissolving Resistance" Technique

1.  ADHD client gives himself permission to let his mind wander.  2. ADHD client talks back to any fearful thoughts or feelings that well up in him.  3. ADHD client daydreams for a few minutes.

"Adding Up Blessings" Technique

1.  ADHD client makes list of blessings, or good things, in his or her life.  2. ADHD client makes list of all the bad things that are not a part of his or her life.  3. ADHD client posts lists in a place where he or she will see them regularly.  4. ADHD client reads lists regularly or when he or she needs a "pick-me-up."

"Evaluating Balancing Issues"

ADHD client answers the following questions: What is your daily/weekly work capacity? How much sleep and rest do you need, including "down time" when there are no demands placed on you? What is your financial bottom line? How much income do you require to maintain an acceptable standard of living? How much time should you devote to family and friends? What must you do to renew yourself spiritually, not just in the sense of religion but regarding anything that gives your life meaning? How much and what kind of recreational activities are critical for your well-being? How long can you work efficiently without taking a break? What obligations must you fulfill? What things are cluttering your life and should be eliminated? How much time do you spend daily on self-maintenance: grooming, dressing, or health care?

"Daily Log" Exercise

1.  ADHD client records his daily activities in a log for a two week period.  2. ADHD client records how much time is spent on each activity.  3. ADHD client rates the difficulty of the activity on a scale of one to ten.  4. ADHD client examines log for observable patterns.

"Moral Inventory"

ADHD client answers the following questions: What can I do well? What can I do adequately? What can’t or shouldn’t I do?

"Scripted Calling" Technique

1.  ADHD client writes down and rehearses what he or she plans to say during a telephone call.  2. ADHD client goes to a quiet, distraction-free area to make the call.  3. ADHD client keeps notes in front of him or her during the call.  4. ADHD client follows the script.

 "STAR" Technique

1.  ADHD client Stops before speaking or taking action.  2. ADHD client Thinks about what he or she will say or do.  3. ADHD client Acts upon his or her decision.  4. ADHD client Reflects on the results of his or her action.

 "Message Center" Tool

1.  ADHD client family gets a bulletin board and puts it in a prominent place near a phone.  2. ADHD client family divides the board into enough spaces for every member of the family, plus one additional space for general messages.  3. Messages posted should be put in the appropriate family member’s space with the name of the family member that took the message and the time and date that he or she took the message.  4. Messages are removed once they have been read.  5. Messages posted in the general section should be initialed by the family member that posted it, and initialed by each other family member upon reading the message. The last family member to read the message removes it from the board.  6. ADHD family members make it a habit to check the board multiple times a day, including when they get home from work or school.

"Written Worries" Exercise

1.  ADHD client writes down a single worry.  2. ADHD client evaluates worry in writing, answering the questions like "How likely is it to occur?" "Is there anything I can do to minimize the risk?" and "If the worst happens, can I handle it?"  3. ADHD client visualizes success to overcome worry.
