Write in names of family members and significant people with which you interacted and the dates they either; arrived, moved out, interacted with family, visited or had any impact on you.  Who on the timeline do you think of when you are asked about family? Who do you have the least or vaguest memories of?  Who are you most comfortable with and least comfortable with?  List three words next to each person on your time line that describe that person.

Family Motto Technique

1) Choose the expression your family used that held the strongest meaning for them 
Examples: "The early bird gets the worm"; "Never tell anything you wouldn't want to swear to in court"; "What they don't know won't hurt them"; "Someday when you have a kid, I hope he gives you as much trouble as you've given me" "God loves unselfish people" & "If you keep making that face, it might freeze that way"
2) After completing this list, add your own expressions.  Which expression holds the greatest meaning?
3) How was this expression been used in your past and how do you feel about it now?  What kind of approach to life does this saying demonstrate?  What does your current reaction to the family motto make you want to do?

Dialoguing with Your Body

Begin a conversation with your body.  The following focus statement is provided to assist you in getting started. 
"I remember how afraid I was, when ……"  Use this opportunity to communicate what your body might say about the abuse and how you feel about the statement.

Expand Self Trust exercise

Think of a time when you trusted and complete the following homework assignment.  Write a short paragraph about one or more of the following "trust experiences":
1. A time of trusting yourself
2. A trustworthy place where you felt comfortable
and or
3. a trusting encounter between yourself and another person
 What elements of your "trust experiences" can you use in your current situation?

Thought Stopping can be used to help recognize and correct thoughts.
When you first realize you are having a dysfunctional thought, you needed to think the word //"STOP" to interrupt the thought.  Next, substitute a positive or working coping statement and think it over and over again. 

When the negative thoughts persist, you might try wearing a rubber band around your wrist and gently pulling it, at the same time, you are thinking stop and your positive or coping statement.

Strengths Based Questioning
Answer the following questions:
"Tell me about what has worked for you in your relationships before?"
"What do you think was the greatest barrier or barriers in your path?"
"How did you overcome that barrier?
"What did you discover about yourself during that situation?"
"Do you think any of these strategies that have worked in the past, might be usable in your current situation?"
"What other alternatives, might you try in your current situation?"
Looking at how you successfully worked through a situation can provide alternatives you might want to re-use to work through another situation.

Creative Coloring or Drawing

Use creative coloring or drawing as an additional medium to express your feelings as you externalize your pain.  Create an abstract picture of yourself, letting the colors represent your self-love; daring to use bold colors to express strong emotion.
