Verbal Prompts

A prompt is a stimulus that is used either to increase a desirable response or to decrease an undesirable response. Prompts are behavioral interventions that direct your client's or staff member's attention to the required behavior. Prompts can be verbal, physical, or environmental cues as to the action you wish your client or staff member to take.

Examples of a verbal prompt occur when parents prompt their children to do homework and household chores. On the tape, an example of a verbal prompt is, "to orient the resident to time, place and person."

Delayed prompting: Over time, as your client or staff member continues to respond correctly to your prompt, a trial period might be initiated in which the prompt is delayed. By delaying the prompt, your client or staff member has an opportunity to respond correctly without the prompt.

The concept of expectancy is introduced via:
A. the type of instructions you give about the target behavior
B. your client's or staff member's prior experience with similar situations
For example, on the tape, it is indicated that a voice tone conveying respect and warmth is needed. The voice tone in your instruction sets up an expectancy in your client or staff member.
